Think of Gascony and you may just think of long sandy beaches, Atlantic rollers and miles and miles of forest. All of which is true and if surfing is your thing then you certainly won’t be short of a wave or two. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find that Gascony has so much more to offer. Bordeaux in the north of the region is one of France’s grandest cities, from where so many of the world’s great wines originate. Further south, towns such as Dax will tell you much about this region’s turbulent history, whilst the elegant resort of Biarritz was much beloved of Queen Victoria. On the coast south of Arcachon and rising over 100m from the Atlantic shore is the astounding Dune du Pilat, the highest sand dune in Europe, whilst inland there are hundreds of kilometres of cycle tracks winding through the shady forests. And before you leave make a visit to one of the region’s many produce markets and try out the local patés, cheeses and of course the Armagnac!
