Essential Travel Info – And Brexit Advice

British citizens are required to carry a full 10 year British passport when visiting the EU, or other countries in Europe or beyond. Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your holiday, and preferably at least 6 months beyond. All infants and children must also have their own passport. If any members of your party need to renew or obtain a passport, we recommend you apply at least 2 months before your holiday. See or call the UK Passport Office on 0300 222 0000 for advice and information. Citizens of other countries should check with the relevant authorities for passport and visa requirements.

Health Cards

In addition to taking out travel insurance for all members of your party we strongly recommend that you obtain an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), which will provide access to public healthcare systems in the EU and Switzerland. Apply on-line at or at your local Post Office (UK) or or your local Health Office (Ireland). Please check any current EHIC  cards as they are only valid for up to 5 years.

Brexit and Travel to Europe

Whatever form Brexit finally takes, there shouldn’t be anything to stop you enjoying your holiday in 2019.  Our trade association, ABTA, has full up to date information and advice on what may happen if the UK leaves the EU, with or without a deal in place. Although there have been some different things said in media, some of the key points are:

  • You shouldn’t need a visa to visit any EU countries, though it is worth ensuring all passports are valid for 6 months beyond your holiday
  • If you plan to drive abroad, it may be worth getting an International Driving Permit to support your UK driving licence (£5.50 from Post Offices)
  • If you take your own car abroad, you may need to ask your car insurance company to provide a ‘green card’ document
  • You should still be able to travel with pets, but should discuss the requirements with your vet at the earliest opportunity as required checks and documents may change
